HINT in partnership with EWB-UK to provide clean water supply

December 11, 2008 by Genesis Leave a Comment

HINT is currently working with Engineers Without Borders (EWB), UK on a project dubbed “Enabling Safe Watter Supply”. The project aims to make use of the Ndongo stream in Buea to provide clean drinking water to the population of Buea and its environs.

The Research Proposal is now being advertised on EWB-UK’s websites. A group of engineering students in the UK will travel to Buea to carry out further research and to determine the best technology that can be designed to solve the problem.

Details about the Research Proposal and EWB-UK can be found here: http://www.ewb-uk.org/HINT

Back Packs 2008 support over 30 underprivileged children

September 28, 2008 by Genesis Leave a Comment

Back Packs 2008 took place on 28th September 2008 in Buea. This program reached out to about 30 kids from mostly the primary school while the Joseph and Heather Talbot Prize was awarded to Mr. Akembom Pascal, HINT’s Administrative Assistant and Manager of our Bonduma IT Centre for his selfless service to the people of Buea through HINT. This annual prize is given in memory of Joseph & Heather Talbot who volunteered selflessly at HINT for 12 months during 2006/2007

Without this support, many of these children will not be able to go to school and most of them will perform poorly in school.

After going through all the application forms four (5) qualified children were given full support for one year, while the rest received partial support depending on the needs they had put forth in their request. Unfortunately, we could not be of help to all the needy children identified due to our limited financial resources.

However, we wish to thank all who donated for Back Packs 2008 and hope that you will continue to support this program in the coming years. We raised just a little over FCFA 300,000 and spent a lot more than that. Thank you tot all our donors.

Pictures of the award ceremony are here.

Back from South Africa

July 2, 2008 by Genesis Leave a Comment

Greetings again from Cameroon. Trust that you and your family are are doing fine.

We returned from South Africa about 2 weeks ago and are still settling down tot life again. South Africa was a wonderful experience with God as we opened up and allowed Him to speak to us.

We are already making plans for an outreach here in Buea next month. We keep you informed about this.

Meanwhile, we are also putting things together for this year’s Food For Funds (FFF) event. Brian and Christe will be hosting their second event. We would like to encourage you to be a host in this year’s event. To participate, please visit www.fff.hintonline.org and register online.

To see how your involvement is helping to change lives, please visit this link: http://www.fff.hintonline.org/07testimonies.htm. The success of the program lies in our model: serving mostly women only in groups.

We processed and mailed your receipt for last year’s donation but the mail seems to have been missing. We are working with Brian to ensure you receive a receipt for your gift of last year.

Thank you again for standing with us to change lives in real ways.

Regards,
Genesis Tinshu

Fire Renders 20 Homeless in Buea

The Post (Buea)

About 20 inhabitants of Street Four, Great Soppo, Buea, have been rendered homeless by a fire disaster that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, May 8.

The inferno reportedly started at about 8 am after a heavy downpour, which saw frequent power cuts by AES SONEL. The fire completely consumed a plank building, accommodating about five families, within 10 minutes.

The exact cause of the fire could not be ascertained, however, many of the victims attribute the cause to the intermittent power cuts that morning. According to them, when the current was on and off, it caused a spark on the electricity meter that was attached on a board, which ignited the flames. The fire reportedly caught the plank building and rose to the roof.

Were it not of the timely intervention of some volunteers, who probed into the scene and shattered the roofs of the neighbouring houses that flanked the blazing one, all the houses around that area could have been razed down.

One of the victims, Esther Lari, who lost all her belongings, told The Post that she was at her business place that morning, and was alerted by a distress call, only to meet the ruins of her entire household. She said she lost everything including FCFA 130,000.

“I am a mother of four, and right now, I have lost everything including money. Two of my children are prospective candidates for this year’s GCE examination and they have lost all of their books,” said Lari.

Another victim, Elsie Ojong, a petty trader, lamented the lost of her life investments. She said they had lived in that apartment for more than 20 years. She cursed AES SONEL for being the cause of their predicaments.

Meanwhile, Christine Abie Ndie, who suffered minor casualties, given that only part of her apartment, the roof and windows were affected, estimated the entire repercussion to about FCFA 20 million.

It should be recalled that this is about the fifth fire incidence that has occurred in Great Soppo, in recent times. The people of Buea and its environs are continuously begging the powers that be to set up a fire brigade in Buea, and why not the chief towns of all the provinces. They are also calling on the municipal authority to come to their aid through a council solidarity fund.

HINT’s IT Technician present during deployment of Invineo systems at Bafia

April 23, 2008 by Genesis Leave a Comment

HINT’s relentless efforts in providing ICT to the underprivileged and local community at no cost has been a challenge. We are concerned about serving you better. The installation in Bafia wasn’t any problem at all except that it had a lot of work since only three technicians were involved. HINT’s representative enjoyed a good climatic condition, while in Bafia.

We are very pleased to have Inveneo as our ICT partner. HINT wishes to sett up a project to supply Buea with cheap Internet services, from a single or more Access Point(s). We believe with a single Access point (Nano station 2) which is very cheap and efficient it can cover the whole of Buea looking at the sloppy nature of the Town.

This can only be done with your support. If you make this happen please contact us.
