What is Food for Funds

March 20, 2007 by Genesis Leave a Comment

Every October 16,  the world commemorates World Food Day (WFD). While others will have more than enough to eat, others will be dying of hunger. What an unequal world. I have had the opportunity to visit countries in Europe and America and I am amazed at how much food is thrown away. On the other hand, I have also had countless number of people who have approached me in my community for help and who sincerely cannot afford the very basic of life – food.

During the week of October 12 – 19, 2008, we are asking that you bring together 2 or more people or as many as you can bring together for a meal. You will eat together with your group members and then discuss ways to effectively end hunger in the world. You will also watch together, PowerPoint presentations (and maybe videos) about how HINT is helping rural people overcome poverty in Cameroon, Sub-saharan Africa.

Finally, you will be invited to make a donation that will be used by HINT to extend micro-credit to rural women in Cameroon, to help them overcome poverty.

In 2007, we raised close to $3,000 from 15 donors who gathered at Arlington, USA during the first ever Food For Funds event that we orgainsed through the effort of one family – Brian & Christe Dodds. The funds were used to extend credit to 25 rural women organised in 4 credit groups in two rural communities in the the South West of Cameroon.

Our target for 2008 is a minimum of $10,000 to help a minimum of 80 rural women. Our vision is to see thousands of women liberated from poverty.

We now invite you to participate in FFF 2008 by becoming a host or joining an up-coming FFF event closest to you.

March 29, 2005 by Genesis Leave a Comment

Tinshu Genesis G. Executive Director of HINT was once again one of 16 West African NGO leaders selected and sponsored to attend Kabissa’s second Training-of-Trainers program dedicated to using the Time to Get Online curriculum to advance the use of ICTs in their own communities.

By the end of the Training-of-Trainers workshop, participants would be able to:

  • Comfortably lead a Time to Get Online workshop for their own communities
  • Apply new facilitation skills to all of their trainings
  • Develop a sustainability plan for conducting future Time to Get Online workshops.

Like all other participants, Tinshu returned with 3o copies of the Time to Get Online Training manuals. He hopes to be able to transfer the rich training to Local NGO leaders in his country.

See Photographs of the workshop.

HINT's work acknowledged by Cameroon Government

January 27, 2005 by Genesis Leave a Comment

The Minister Delegate at Cameroon’s Ministry of External Relations has written a letter of congratulations to Tinshu Genesis Gemuh Executive Director of Helps International (HINT) in recognition of the Prize he received from the hands of the Mayor of Rome as well as HINT’s efforts to help bridge the digital divide by providing access and training to the new ICTs.

The letter dated January 24 2005 with reference number 00219/DIPL/D3/SDCNG/ONG was received as a big surprise as all of us at HINT did not know that the government was aware of our little efforts to ease access to information and communication in our local communities.

One of our major projects is providing access and training to information and communication technologies through computers connected to the internet. We have two main levels of training: Basic and Advanced.

You can download a copy of the ministerial letter (link to a pdf document).
