Orphans and children from poor homes have no way of getting a good, descent and quality education. Most of them end up in government schools which are not good enough for them. In answer to this HINT has plans to set up a Community Education Centre in Buea that will offer quality education to those who cannot afford it.

If you wish to help with any of these projects, please contact us.

CELs ensures that children in primary and secondary schools have the textbooks they need to be successful in their studies.

Following a research conducted by Heather Talbot, an international volunteer from the UK, we discovered the lack of Textbooks seriously hinders children’s’ education. So we decided to set up a Community Education Library (CEL) that will stock 3300 books comprising 8 different subjects for primary 6 . We will stock 300 copies of each of 8 textbooks meaning that between 400-600 class 6 children will be helped through the library with each child receiving 4-6 books.

Due to poverty, many children are unable to go to school. Several others die young because of lack of basic medical attention. Many are being kidnapped, sexually exploited, and abused. Many from the villages are used for child labour in many home. Many as young as 4-5 years are involved in hawking. Many are still being orphaned because of AIDS. Many of them are being denied their rights. Through our Child Sponsorship project we help these children to be able to go to school, receive medical attention, be clothed, have a foster Christian parent, and a sense of being cared for and belonging to a home. We Provide, books, fees, and uniforms to these orphans and children from poor families.

So far, we have been able to help over 100 children and this number is expected to more than double in 2007. Usually, we award the school supplies and the scholarships during an annual program we call Back Packs. Here are pictures of Back Packs 2006 and some of the awardees. Back Packs 2007 has been scheduled to hold on September 1. This program reached out to about 30 kids from mostly the primary school while the Joseph and Heather Talbot Prize was awarded to Mr. Akembom Pascal, HINT’s Administrative Assistant and Manager of our Bonduma IT Centre for his selfless service to the people of Buea through HINT. This annual prize is given in memory of Joseph & Heather Talbot who volunteered selflessly at HINT for 12 months during 2006/2007

Without this support, many of these children will not be able to go to school and most of them will perform poorly in school.

After going through all the application forms four (5) qualified children were given full support for one year, while the rest received partial support depending on the needs they had put forth in their request. Unfortunately, we could not be of help to all the needy children identified due to our limited financial resources.

However, we wish to thank all who donated for Back Packs 2008 and hope that you will continue to support this program in the coming years. We raised just a little over FCFA 300,000 and spent a lot more than that. Thank you tot all our donors.

On September 8, 2007, HINT will provide education Support in the form of Scholarships, textbooks, uniforms to about 100 over 50 orphans and children from poor home in and around Buea. On that same day, we will also formally launch the Buea Community Library Project (BCLP).

BCLP focuses on providing school textbooks to orphas and children from poor homes so that they can still get a good education. Joanna Tillson, a volunteer from the USA has worked very hard for the past 5 weeks to put all this program together.

We are currently accepting donations to these and other children. CFA 25,000 (US$ 53) will buy all textbooks for 1 primary 6 child in a year; CFA 50,000 (US$ 106) will provide for 2 children, and so on. Go here to read more and learn how to donate.

In 2006, about 30 children were helped.

During Back Packs 2006, we instituted the Joseph and Heather Talbot Prize for Service to Humanity in honour of the Joseph and Heather Talbot, volunteers from London working for HINT who were present during the award ceremony. The prize was instituted to appreciate and promote their heart of sacrifice and voluntarism in Community projects.

The prize will be awarded each to a child in our community who has been noted by many to have a heart of a volunteer; one who is ready to serve and not look for a reward from men.

The 2006 prize was awarded to John Onofio of Government Primary School at Bonduma. John made sure that there was always clean drinking water at the HINT office. Each day, he would stop by at the office to collect bottles to fill with clean fresh water.

The prize has a monetary value of CFA 200,000 (US$ 400, GBP 200) attached to it. The money will be used to cater for a child’s entire education for the whole year including books, uniform, school fees, and health care.

We are now accepting donations for the 2007 prize. Donate online via PayPal.

Together we can help thousands of children and end up educating a whole generation
